Apache Spirit by Yazzie
|
Apache is derived from the Yuman apa (man), ahwa (war; fight; battle), and tche, which pluralizes the combination. Crown Dancers, are to be Mountain Spirits, they appear after dark and disappear before dawn. They are always accompanied and led by the Devil who acts like a clown while the dancers execute precise, spectacular, rhythmic routines around a big fire. Wearing buckskin skirts from the waist to just below the knees, high stub-toed boots ringed with bells and rattles are set off by high colorful crowns. The dancers, bare to the waist, painted with symbolic designs, always wear black masks. In keeping with true Apache tradition, no one knows who they are or from whence they come.
